Create a vintage inspired DIY flower bucket in a few simple steps to display beautiful spring blooms! It’s Lydi back from Lydi Out Loud and today let’s pretend that it’s spring, With all of the dark days of January behind us I’m super anxious for the bright flowers and spring colors. I created this vintage inspired DIY flower bucket to bring some spring indoors and it has created such a bright and cheerful focal point in our entryway. See how easy it is to create one for yourself!
VINTAGE INSPIRED DIY FLOWER BUCKET SUPPLIES:
- Darice 13″ French Galvanized Bucket
- Number and Letter Stencils (I created mine with a Cricut Maker machine.)
- Black Acrylic Paint (Outdoor paint if you plan to keep your flower bucket outside.)
- Darice Foam Stencil Brush
- Sand Paper (Optional for metal finish.)
- ½ Cup White Vinegar (Optional for metal finish.)
- 2 Tablespoons Salt (Optional for metal finish.)
- Spray Bottle (Optional for metal finish.)
The French Galvanized Bucket comes in a standard shiny finish and since I decided I wanted a vintage inspired look for my DIY flower bucket I had to give the bucket itself a little. If you prefer the shiny finish you can skip immediately to the stenciling step.
Lightly sand the entire surface of the flower market bucket. You want to remove all of the shine from the surface but you don’t want to create any scratches. You may want to wear gloves and old clothes for this as it got a little messy.
Add white vinegar and salt to a spray bottle and shake well. Lay the flower market bucket flat (in a sink or on a protected surface) and drench it with the vinegar/salt solution. Once it has dried spray it again. Repeat until the flower market bucket has reached the level of weathering that suits your preference. Flip over and repeat to oxidize the other side. Allow to dry thoroughly (overnight is great) before moving on to stenciling.
Secure your stencil in place with painters tape or stencil tape. I surrounded the stencil with post-it’s to avoid any paint getting outside of the perimeter of the stencil. Dip the stencil brush into the black paint and tap off most of the paint onto a plate or napkin. You don’t want to stencil with your brush too saturated with paint or it will cause the paint to bleed out of the sides design. You don’t have to get 100% coverage with the paint some color and shade variation will only contribute to the vintage look of the flower market bucket.
I can’t wait for my yard to start filling up with blooms that I can display in my DIY flower bucket but in the meantime these faux roses are working just fine!
